Silicium

What is silicium?

Silicium is one of the least studied minerals that is required by human body. Silicium, also sometimes known as Silicon or (Si) in the periodic table is an essential mineral for our body. It is especially useful in preventing bones and joints related ailments. As not much study has been carried out regarding to this Silicium element, thus the actual amount needed by our body is still relatively unknown. However, it is believed that only 40mg/day of Silicium is required by our body as only a very small amount of this silicium mineral is present in our body tissues.

Benefits of Silicium on Health

Silicium is a vital supplement in keeping our nerve cells and tissues functioning properly as well as in helping to maintain our bones healthy. It can prevent or at least slow down the progression of osteoporosis as we age. Besides that, silicium is also needed for the synthesizing of Vitamin B1 or thiamine in our body.

Silicium is also an essential mineral for keeping our skins, hairs, nails, teeth, and even our eyes healthy. It can protect our skins from becoming flabby, makes our eyes bright, and also our nails and hairs beautiful. Silicium can be found in many skin care and make-up and other beauty products.

Silicium Food Sources

Silicium can be found in many food sources. Silicium can be easily obtained in most of our daily foods. Among the common food sources of Silicium are listed as below:

  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Almonds
  • Peanuts
  • Cabbages
  • Onions
  • Whole Grains
  • Carrots
  • Fish
  • Corn
  • Honey
  • Beers
  • Pumpkins

Silicium is mainly concentrated in fruits and vegetables that are high in cellulose.

Symptoms of Silicium Deficiency

Symptoms of silicium deficiency includes :

  • soft and brittle nails
  • flabby skins
  • poor bone and teeth growth
  • skin wrinkles
  • hair loss
  • flaky lips
  • thinning of hair
  • osteoporosis
  • stiff joints
  • tuberculosis
  • formation of plaque in arteries
  • eye floaters
  • Alzheimer's disease

Whoever wrote this article appears to not understand the difference between silicium, which is the latin name for silicon, and selenium, which is an entirely different chemical element altogether. The body requires trace quantities of selenium. There is little evidence to support a biological need for silicon in humans, and besides, it will not be found in any significant quantity in the foods mentioned as dietary sources. Most silicon compounds are relatively non-reactive and cannot be processed by the human body anyway. Sand, for example, is silicon dioxide (or "silicium" dioxide) - eating sand will not provide your body with extra silicon, it will just send you to the hospital with severe pains in your abodmen.

Silicon (or silicium in latin) is indeed a mineral that is required by our body and can be easily sourced from vegetables and fruits. In fact, studies have shown that dietary silicon intake is not only great for the skin, nail and hair, but also very important for the formation of bones in the body. It works in synergy with calcium to make the bones stronger. In this case, calcium is like the cement while silicon is like the reinforcing steel inside it. Here's a research done a couple of years ago about the effect of dietary silicon on the health of our bones.

According to professor Vernadsky, Silicium is the most important mineral that has to be taken care of, much more important than calcium or magnesium. Autarchex, selenium is indeed important but only as a trace element. Silicium, on the other hand is has to be supplied in large quantities on a regular basis with food (or supplements if needed). Thank you Gourgeously for your article. And yeah, silica and silicium is the same thing. Eating sand sounds like fun:) but sand is silica oxide and will not help... you need horsetail extract or edible clay and lots of veggies! Don't forget about copper and zinc!
