Certain medical conditions such as hyper-thyroidism, anxiety, depressive disorder, inflammatory bowel disease or even cancer may contribute to weight loss or difficulty in gaining some weight. Difficulties in gaining weight

There are also some people who seem to always defy the odds like making claims ranging from smokers who smoke heavily do not have cancers at all to junk-food lovers who are never fat. In any way, we should all treat our bodies like a precious gift. We should nourish it with great nutrients and strengthening it with regular workouts and exercises.

Some people who find it hard to gain weight might also be having just one or two meals a day and although they may be able to eat bigger portions of their meals, their irregular meal time could mean total calories intake for that particular day might not be enough to maintain their overall weight. Even worse, some are just eating junk foods and not regular meals.

Assessing all the possibilities

There are also many cases of people who have the intention to put on weight, particularly in the age range of between 18 to 50. If the main cause of difficulties in gaining weight is genetic, and not medical reasons, one can still be healthy being underweight. All possibilities have to be assessed and ruled out before jumping into conclusions which of course includes calories intake and calories burned each day.

If the cause of the problem is associated with bad eating habits, then there will be a need for the person to be assessed and managed to ensure that he or she lives up to a healthy body weight or otherwise, serious medical problems may arise later. Dietitians have recommended that people who falls under this group of not having sufficient calories intake to include sesame oil into their dishes, have margarine, butter or jam on their breads instead of eating plain. It has also been recommended that one should eat more meals if one can't eat in large volume. Also, having healthy snacks regularly such as fruits, juice, milk, toast or biscuits in between meals is recommended.

Know the reasons

For example, someone who is anxious has fast reactions in life. He or she may react fast or overreact on a given situation and as such, he or she might actually be moving about a lot, without even realising it. Also, some people tend to make little actions like walking around a lot in order to get their work done. These activities nevertheless, used up alot of their body's calories as energy.

Apart from that, exercise is in fact, a very important factor in being healthy. While a person may not seem to be fat, it does not actually mean that he or she is healthy. Many people have the misconception that thin equals healthy while fat means unhealthy. In actual, it is not. Fatness is not a good gauge for health. Thin people may also get clogged arteries, hypertension and fatty bellies too. Instead of fatness, fitness should be a more powerful indicator of good health.

Recommended diet for gaining weight

Underweight people are also encouraged to follow the Food Guide Pyramid to ensure eating a healthy and balanced diet. Total calories intake should come from the following:

  • 55%-60% from carbohydrates
  • 30% from protein
  • 10%-15% from fats.

Calculating weight gain target

Total energy requirements of a person is calculated based on weight, physical activity pattern and basal metabolism rate. For example, a female who weights 110 pounds may require total energy intake of 1,500 kilocalories (kcal) per day. For a weight gain of 1 to 2 pounds in a week, it is recommended that the person consume an additional 500-1,000 kcal per day for a week.

The formula for weight gain is 3,500 kcal intake = 1 pound of weight gain. Hence, by following the example illustrated above, one would gain about 1 to 2 pounds in a week by simply multiplying 500-1,000kcal intake per day by 7 which equals 3,500kcal-7,000kcal which is then equivalent to 1 to 2 pounds of weight gain.
