What Is Moissanite And How Does It Exists?

The moissanite used in a moissanite jewelry today is a mineral that does not occur naturally on Earth. It's existence on Earth is brought down by meteorites that have been showering the Earth over millions of years. Moissanite was first discovered by a Nobel Prize winner, Dr.Henri Moissan, a scientist from France who has found the new mineral known as silicon carbide in the Diablo Canyon of Arizona which is a site of an ancient meteorite. This mineral later named after him, is very scarcely available on in this planet. Its supply is in fact, so limited that it is not applicable for jewelry use.

About a century later in the 1990s, scientists have found a method to create synthetic moissanite through a laboratory process. Since then, moissanite has been introduced for making jewelries and in the year 1995, Charles & Colvard has became a partner with Cree, a research lab to develop moissanite for the company under the Cree colorless development program. Today, Charles & Colvard has become the worldwide manufacturer and the marketer of moissanite.

Moissanite Jewelry And Its Characteristics

Moissanite stone used in moissanite jewelry has many characteristics that are even greater than diamonds. As diamond is one of the most beautiful and costly jewels available to date, it has become an important symbol for engagements in many parts of the world. Besides engagement rings, diamonds have also been used in earrings, necklaces, pendants as well as bracelets.

Due to the high costs of diamonds, there have been many attempts to replicate the beauty of diamonds for a lower costs such as by using cut glass, cubic zirconium or even rhinestones. These attempts however failed in many ways as they simply lack the brilliance and luster of the real diamond. Until the availabilty of moissanite as jewelry, moissanite has shown many similar characteristics of a diamonds.

A moissanite could easily outshine a real diamond and also exhibits more fire and luster compared to it. Its hardness is also very much comparable to that of a real diamond too, all at the fraction of the costs of a diamond. Their many similarities have made many jewelers having a hard time diffentiating between a diamond and a moissanite. Even a standard diamond testers simulant could not detect the difference between a moissanite from a diamond.
